Keycap Wall Thickness by Material: PBT and ABS in mm
Compare published PBT and ABS keycap thickness in millimetres, separate wall dimensions from legend methods, and read the limits of vendor specifications.
Keycap wall thickness is a dimension of a particular part, not a fixed property of PBT or ABS. Both materials appear in sets advertised at 1.5 mm. Read the named set’s specification before assuming that PBT means thick walls or that ABS means thin walls. A material label alone supplies neither a wall dimension nor a tolerance.
This reference compares published figures and explains how to record them. The numbers below come from manufacturer listings, not measurements by Keycap Specs Editorial. They describe the listed products and should not be extended to a brand’s entire catalogue.

The first value is from Keychron’s shine-through set specification. The second comes from its separate Cyber Developer product page. The ABS entry comes from GMK’s CYL Finer Things R2 listing.
These examples support a narrow conclusion: the same advertised thickness occurs with different plastics and legend methods. They do not establish an average thickness, a minimum acceptable thickness or the manufacturing spread within any of the sets. Three catalogue entries are not a representative survey of all keycaps.
The table also avoids filling an undocumented field by inference. If a page says thickness without specifying the measuring location, keep that limitation in the record. A more detailed drawing could change how the number should be interpreted without changing the advertised number itself.
Wall thickness, cap height and key width
A thickness comparison needs a clear definition of the dimension being compared. Record a wall dimension across the plastic at a specified location. Record height separately from the cap’s base to the stated point on its top. Record key width separately again, identifying whether the value is a physical width or a layout unit.
This distinction prevents a common reading error: a figure in millimetres beside a profile diagram may describe cap height rather than wall thickness. Signature Plastics’ keycap family specifications distinguish families through profile shape and construction. Those family descriptions are useful context, but a profile name should not substitute for a wall-thickness field.
For height and row identity, use keycap row codes and profile heights. For the layout grid, use keycap sizes and bottom-row coverage. Keeping these dimensions separate also makes a request for a missing specification easier to answer: ask for the side wall of a named key, rather than simply asking how big the keycap is.
What moulding and legend methods tell you
Double-shot and dye sublimation describe different ways of producing legends. They should occupy a separate column from material and thickness. In the manufacturer examples above, double-shot is used with both ABS and PBT, while the dye-sublimated PBT example carries the same advertised thickness as the double-shot examples.
That observation does not prove the parts have identical internal geometry. Nor does double-shot mean that the published thickness should be doubled. Unless a drawing labels each section separately, use the thickness exactly as the manufacturer presents it. Do not add an imagined inner layer to a catalogue figure.
Deskthority’s keycap-material reference discusses plastics and manufacturing behaviour, including moulding shrinkage. Such material background can explain why tooling and production method matter, but it does not provide a universal finished-wall specification for every PBT or ABS cap. A general material description cannot supply the missing tolerance on a particular product page.
Likewise, a legend method cannot establish the resin formulation of every part of a cap. Where a listing does not specify the material of each shot or component, preserve its wording instead of converting it into a claim about resin purity. The useful dimensional record is what the manufacturer actually identifies.
Nominal figures are not tolerance ranges
An advertised 1.5 mm value and a drawing labelled 1.5 mm with an explicit plus-or-minus tolerance would carry different information. The first tells you a nominal figure. The second would also define an allowed interval at the location shown. The listings above do not supply that second piece in their thickness entries.
Do not turn a nominal figure into an acceptance limit. If an owner reports a different reading, record the cap, row, location and method before declaring a specification violation. The catalogue number and the reported reading may describe different sections of the part. Neither a disagreement nor agreement establishes consistency across the rest of the set.
Similarly, avoid a table claiming that all ABS occupies one millimetre band and all PBT another. Such bands would require an identified dataset and a sampling method. This page has product examples, so its conclusions remain product-specific. The shared 1.5 mm figure is useful precisely because it demonstrates why the material label cannot select a thickness for you.
How to document a community measurement
A community measurement can add detail that a listing omits when its method is visible. The following is a suggested reporting format, not a claim that this desk has measured the products:
- Identify the set, material as sold, profile, key width and physical keyboard row.
- Photograph or diagram the wall section being measured so another reader can locate it.
- State the instrument and its stated resolution. Keep resolution separate from an accuracy claim.
- Record each reading with its location instead of averaging different walls into one unexplained number.
- Say how many caps were checked and whether any were from another kit or production run.
- Keep the manufacturer’s nominal value alongside the readings, with the product-page reference.
If a source gives only one number and an underside photograph, label it as one reported measurement with an unspecified method. It can be a lead for further checking without becoming a replacement for a manufacturer’s drawing. Missing method information should stay visible when the number is repeated elsewhere.
When comparing two reports, first align the part and measuring location. Comparing a space bar in one report with a letter key in another does not isolate a difference between materials. A useful comparison changes one identified variable at a time and states the variables it cannot control.
Thickness does not certify fit or sound
The thickness entries cited here do not give a completed compatibility test for a keyboard. A cap still needs the appropriate width, row, socket and stabiliser arrangement. Follow keycap wobble diagnosis when a cap sits loosely or a large key binds; selecting a thicker cap is not a diagnosis of that joint.
Manufacturer language about a deeper or more solid sound is also separate from dimensional evidence. The cited thickness entries do not include a controlled acoustic comparison across keyboards. They therefore do not justify assigning a sound frequency or guaranteed sound character to every cap at 1.5 mm.
The keycap profile and wall thickness sizer offers illustrative presets. Use the dimensional articles alongside it to distinguish an input assumption from a specification for the set you own. A preset cannot fill an undocumented tolerance or confirm clearance for an unlisted combination.
Before choosing a thickness
Start with a set that covers the keyboard, then look for its published wall dimension. Save the source and the exact product variant. Note whether the manufacturer identifies a wall, a general thickness or a cross-sectional drawing, and leave the tolerance blank if none is supplied.
Where a decision depends on a missing dimension, request a drawing or a clearly located measurement for that part. This produces a checkable question without turning a material preference into an unsupported engineering claim. PBT and ABS remain useful material descriptions; millimetres belong to the documented part.
